So before you touch tracking, write the problem down in measurable terms: “Able shows 82 purchases yesterday, Shopify shows 100,” or “30% of purchases are Direct/None in Able,” or “Meta reports 120 purchases, but Able and Shopify both show ~100.” That sentence becomes your scope and prevents random changes that only increase confusion.

Verify the conversion “should” be tracked (paid, not refunded, not test)
Sometimes, “missing conversions” are real orders that shouldn’t be in the comparison. Check for edge cases that inflate discrepancies: unpaid/incomplete orders, multi-currency reporting differences, subscription trials that aren’t truly paid yet, duplicate orders, offline/manual orders, and test transactions.
Also watch timing: an order created yesterday but paid today will “exist” in Shopify while your tracking logic might fire on a different status change.

order_id/ invoice ID / CRM deal ID- customer email and/or phone (if available)
- timestamp (with timezone)
- value + currency (and any refunds/partial refunds)
- product(s) / plan / SKU
- landing page, UTMs, or source (if known)

Step 2 — Check ingestion: did your server-side event reach your tracking system?
Once you’ve confirmed the conversion exists in Shopify/Stripe/your CRM, the next question is brutally simple: can you find that exact conversion event inside your tracking system for one of the orders on your trace list? If you can’t, don’t touch attribution rules or ad platform settings yet — this is an ingestion problem, and everything downstream will be noise.

Ingestion failures tend to look like one of two patterns.
“Nothing arrives” is the cleanest signal: your system of record shows orders, but Able has zero matching events for the same time window — often after a deploy, endpoint change, or credential rotation.
“Partial drops” are trickier: some events show up, but a consistent slice doesn’t appear in ad platforms / Events Manager. Partial drops can also masquerade as attribution issues if the event arrives but can’t be tied to an identifier or arrives too late to be useful.

Most ingestion problems come down to a few repeat offenders:
- Wrong endpoint URL/path (posting to the wrong webhook route or environment)

Step 3 — Diagnose identity & attribution gaps (why conversions become Direct/None or unattributed)
If your purchase counts look “right,” but a big chunk shows up as Direct/None (or unattributed - showing in Meta Events Manager, but missing from Ads manager, for example), treat it as an identity problem first—not an attribution-settings problem. The conversion happened and arrived, but the destination platform can’t reliably connect that server-side purchase back to the original visit/click because the identifiers that do the stitching (UTMs, click IDs, email/phone, customer IDs) were missing, inconsistent, or captured too late.
The real root cause of “unattributed”: missing or late identifiers
Most unattributed conversions are simply “anonymous conversions.” That can happen when the first meaningful identifier (like an email) only appears at the end of the funnel — after the purchase has already been processed server-side — or when click IDs/UTMs aren’t carried forward into the final request.
Sequencing matters more than people expect: if your pipeline processes purchase before it processes lead_submitted, checkout_started, or logged_in, your totals will still look fine… but the source assignment will be weak because the conversion had nothing to attach to at the moment it was recorded.
Cross-domain and multi-step funnels: where sessions split
Attribution also breaks when the journey crosses domains or subdomains and tracking isn’t consistent across them. Common culprits are moving from www → checkout. subdomain, sending users to a hosted payment domain, or bouncing through an auth domain for login.
The fix is usually boring but critical: ensure cross-domain tracking is enabled and implemented consistently everywhere the user touches the funnel. If one step drops UTMs/click IDs or sets cookies differently, you’ve created a “new session,” and the purchase often gets credited to Direct. When you’re debugging your case list, look for the earliest point where you could have known who the user was — and confirm it happens before the purchase is processed:
- Lead forms: is email/phone captured (and passed server-side) at submit time?
- Checkout start: do you persist UTMs/click IDs into the checkout session/order metadata?
- Login/account creation: does your customer ID get associated to the same visitor?
- Purchase timing: does the
purchaseevent arrive after those identifiers are recorded?

A few gotchas show up constantly: wrong protocol (http vs https), a subtle trailing slash difference that changes the resolved path, and mixing environments (sending traffic to sgtm-staging.example.com while previewing sgtm.example.com). If you’re using a custom domain via CNAME, confirm DNS is correct and that the request actually lands on the same load balancer/service backing your server container.
‘No client claimed request’: path/method mismatches and Client config
If requests arrive but sGTM says “No client claimed request”, the container got the traffic — but none of your Clients recognized it. Check what’s actually hitting the server: request path and method (GET vs POST) must match what your Client expects.
Common mismatches include posting to the wrong endpoint (e.g., your tag sends to /data but the Client only listens on /g/collect or another route), or using POST with a content type the Client doesn’t parse. Fixing this is usually a matter of aligning the web tag’s endpoint with a compatible built-in Client (or configuring a custom Client that matches the incoming request shape).
Preview mode vs real users: ad blockers, privacy tooling, and false confidence
sGTM preview can give false confidence because your browser is a friendly test environment. Real users may be behind ad blockers, privacy extensions, DNS filtering, corporate proxies, or browser restrictions that selectively block requests (or strip parameters) even when your preview looks perfect.
To validate, pull a small sample of real-user conversions from your case list and confirm you can see corresponding requests in server logs (Cloud Run/App Engine/LB access logs) and downstream delivery. Step 5 — Confirm outbound delivery: did Meta/Google/GA4 actually accept the conversion?
By this point you may have proven that the conversion exists (Shopify/Stripe/CRM) and that your tracking system received it.
‘Received but didn’t forward’: triggers, filters, and credentials
First, make sure the outbound pipe is even allowed to run. A simple checklist catches most “it’s in Able but not in Meta/GA4” cases:

In practice, duplicates usually come from overlapping systems that all think they’re the source of truth. The most common patterns are:
- The same purchase fires in the browser (Pixel) and again server-side (CAPI), but the
event_id/order key doesn’t line up consistently. - Multiple plugins/apps inject their own pixel or “auto-track” checkout events (Shopify apps are frequent culprits).
- Parallel tracking stacks (e.g., sGTM forwarding + a CDP/webhook integration) emit the same
Purchaseevent name. - One backend trigger fires twice (e.g., order updated and order paid both mapped to “Purchase”).
If you’re using Able, it should be sending original click ID with the event automatically. Consequently, you can eliminate any chances of deduplication issues by only keeping the server-side event sent by Able.
Why dedup can silently drop your better event
Deduplication isn’t “set-and-forget.” When ad platforms receive both a browser Pixel event and a server CAPI event and decides they’re duplicates, it may keep the first one it processed — which is often the browser event with weaker identity data and fewer parameters. That can reduce match quality and hurt reporting even if the purchase count doesn’t obviously spike.
A safer pattern: split responsibilities (PageView vs conversions)
A clean division of labor is usually safer: keep the browser Pixel for top-of-funnel signals like PageView (and maybe ViewContent), and send real conversions (like Purchase) server-side once, from one authoritative source (Shopify/Stripe/CRM). To verify, pick 3–5 orders and check whether the same event_id and/or order_id appears twice across your logs/destinations — then confirm in the vendor’s event diagnostics which copy was kept (and whether it kept the richer server-side payload).
Reconciliation queries: timing, identity merges, and drop-off points
Once you have raw events, reconcile systematically instead of “spot checking.” Start by comparing counts by hour/day (not just totals) to find when the divergence begins, then look for sudden step-changes that line up with releases, credential rotations, or mapping changes.
Next, test identity hypotheses: are “missing” conversions actually present but tied to a different visitor/customer due to stitching? Once you’ve fixed today’s discrepancy, the real win is preventing the next one. Server-side tracking doesn’t usually “explode”—it drifts quietly after a plugin update, a mapping tweak, or a credential rotation.
Create a weekly ‘known-good’ test conversion
Set a lightweight standard test you run every week: one test lead + one test purchase, traced end-to-end. Document what “good” looks like in each system (e.g., Shopify/Stripe record created → event appears in Able → forwarded to Meta/GA4 with a success response), including the exact event names and timestamps you expect to see.
When something breaks, you’ll know where it broke — without waiting for a month-end report surprise.
Alert on leading indicators (drop rate, unattributed rate, API error spikes)
You don’t need a full observability stack — just alerts that mirror the pipeline:
- Conversion count vs your source of truth (Shopify/Stripe/CRM)
- Unattributed/Direct share inside Able
- Destination acceptance rate (sent vs accepted)
- API error spikes by integration (rejections, auth failures, rate limits)
